Charles County Literacy Council Services

Currently, the Charles County Literacy Council is providing free one-on-one tutoring in the areas of reading, basic math and English for Speakers of Other Languages to over 120 adult students, including those who have requested help with math and reading comprehension so they can pass the military entrance exam (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)) and go on to serve our country. Your financial donations ensure that we can continue to provide these much needed services to our community.

Students

CCLC is dedicated to helping adult Charles County residents (age 18 or older) improve their literacy and math skills through our tutoring efforts. Each prospective student is first assessed to determine their level of need in reading and/or math. There is a $20.00 fee to help defray the cost of the assessment. Once assessed, the student will be matched with a tutor or will be placed on a waiting list until a tutor is available. All tutoring and books are free. Please keep in mind:
  1. We must have the prospective student contact us personally;
  2. Students will be assigned tutors based on availability;
  3. Once assessed students are asked to sign an agreement in order to ensure their commitment to our program.

Tutors

CCLC provides training to adults (age 18 and older) who would like to become volunteer tutors. Tutor training classes are 9 hours and spread over a three-night period, typically held twice a year (March and October). Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Please refer to our Events page for our next class and to register. Please keep in mind:
  1. Our class trains but does not certify our tutors;
  2. Once trained, tutors are asked to sign a tutor agreement consisting of a minimum amount of tutoring to be done for CCLC. They will then be assigned a student;
  3. Tutors report their hours and student progress to CCLC on a monthly basis.
