Charles County Literacy Council Events

Join us for the next meeting of the Charles County Literacy Council on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, 7 p.m. in the Meeting Room at the United Way Building in La Plata, MD (10250 La Plata Road, La Plata, MD 20646). We have had a very busy and productive summer and are looking forward to getting together to discuss all the great things happening at the Literacy Council and to share ideas for continued growth. The Early Bird Tutor Session will begin before the Council meeting at 6:15 p.m. Meetings are open to the public and all active and inactive tutors are encouraged to attend.

Fall 2010 Volunteer Tutor Training Workshop – October 26-28, 2010

The Charles County Literacy Council’s next Volunteer Tutor Training Workshop will take place on October 26, 27, 28, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. each evening in Waldorf, MD. All attendees must be 18 or older. Pre-registration is required. Tutor notebooks, resource materials and light dinner fare will be provided. Non-refundable Registration Fee of $20.00. Dine at Applebee’s in La Plata and Help Support the Charles County Literacy Council (Sept 22, 2010)

Come out, eat and support the Charles County Literacy Council. Be a part of Applebee’s Community Connections Program /Dining to Donate. Bring your friends and family members to eat at Applebee’s in La Plata on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 anytime between 4:00 p.m. and close. Present the attached flier to your server anytime during the meal and 20% of the bill will be donated to the Charles County Literacy Council. This is a fun, easy way to help the Literacy Council continue to provide free reading and math materials to our students and to reach those adults in Charles County who need help learning to read and improve their math or English speaking skills. Literacy Council holds Book Discussion as Part of America’s Big Read

We had a super time on Saturday, June 5th meeting to discuss Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. Judith Allen-Leventhal was superb in leading a very thought-provoking discussion about the book itself and ideas for continuing to generate interest among our young people to foster and grow a love for the printed word. Judith also read a few excerpts from the book The Bradbury Chronicles, a biography about the author and how he came to write this particular book. It was a small but lively group and everyone seemed to really enjoy the discussion. One of our tutors brought her out of town house guest who had read the book the evening before and came to join us. She contributed wonderfully with ideas and insight. Another tutor mentioned that for Christmas 2008, her family challenged each other to see how many books they could read over a one-year period. Each family member could choose whatever they wished to read provided the books were at least 150 pages. They enjoyed the challenge immensely and at the end of the year, her husband had read 75 books and other had read a great many books. They came together periodically to talk about what they had read and what they enjoyed or learned. Judith thought this might be a good challenge to include in future newsletters. Many thanks to all who came out to join us on a beautiful Saturday morning. And a special thanks to Judith for leading such an excellent discussion and leaving us hungering for more.
